No one needs to tell us that flies can be very aggravating, especially when dining. But they are also known to spread disease.
Holding an outdoor picnic or having friends over for dinner inside the home? Don’t be embarrassed by pesky flies.
There are the 7 ways, that you can try. Hopefully one of these will appeal to you and you can start ridding the area of flies.
1 – White Vinegar/Cinnamon Spray.
- Spray Bottle
- White Vinegar (fill the bottle but leave some room)
- Cinnamon (one stick or
- 10 Drops Detergent
Clean all surfaces inside the kitchen and other areas known for flies. Shake and spray this mixture on all surfaces.
If there are flies in the home, they will start to drop immediately! You can use this spray anytime you clean to keep flies at bay.
Although this works inside the home, I’ve used it on tabletops outside before setting the table, allowing it to dry first. But there are other deterrents to use outside and will talk about those as well as for inside.
2 – Hang Bags with Vodka
- Vodka (you may have some around the house but do not put the good stuff out for the flies.
- Quart Bags
This is my favorite method of keeping the flies away. They detest the smell of vodka! Depending on the size of the area you are placing the Vodka bags.
I use 1 bag and ½ cup of Vodka per 8×10 foot area. This is perfect for the kitchen and dining area. Poke a hole close to the top of the quart bag and pour ½ cup of Vodka into the bag.
Hang it by the hole anywhere near where you keep food and could attract flies. When dining, I’m sure there are fancier ways to deter these ugly flies that could chase your guests right out the front door.
Perhaps use Vodka in a small glass bowl and place a sprig of lemon grass, rosemary, lavender, in it so no one drinks it and it would make an interesting centerpiece adornment!
The sprig may even assist the vodka in keeping the flies away!
3 – Trap the Flies
- A banana
- A soda with sugar
- Candy piece
- A funnel neck bottle
Place ½ cup of soda in a long neck bottle and drop a piece of banana as well as a piece of candy to lure the flies.
They will not be able to resist and will become trapped. Sometime situations call for drastic measures.
4 – Garlic
- Garlic cloves, as many as you can stand to handle smelling yourself.
This one is simple. Place garlic cloves around your dining area. Flies do not like the smell.
Get creative and you could use these pieces on a centerpiece as a decoration if holding a party. Just be careful not to use so much as to keep the guests away!
Combine with the vodka sprig cups or bowls and you will have a double whammy deterrent.
There is another surprise that I would add to this centerpiece, as I added one more deterrent to this article that is not on the video.
I thought it would be a super pretty way of insuring a fly free dinner party outdoors! See number 7 below.
5 – Essential oils
you will need on or more of the following:
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil
- Lemongrass Essential Oil
- Citronella Essential Oil
What I found enjoyable is to put these oils out in a small plate around the house.
Choose one that you prefer, besides scenting your home they will deter the flies. They just don’t like the smell.
6 – Outdoor aromatic plants
pick up one or more of the following:
- Lavender
- Elderberry
- Basil
Plant these inside and outside the home. Having these plants close to your dining space will also help to keep those pesky flies from bothering us.
Again, having a dinner party? Bring the plants to the table. Or put a vase with cut flowers and add sprigs of basil to keep flies at bay and have an attractive table.
7 – Surprise method
This is the surprise I promised! Take a half of lemon and poke some whole cloves into the top of the cut lemon.
This item is not included on the video, but certainly would be a beautiful addition if you are tempted to continue to become fancy while dining. Can’t you just smell the combination lemon and cloves now?
